Design of the Lessons

Lessons 1—3 and 6—8

In each of these lessons, you will be asked to do the following:

  1. Read each section of a chapter of the textbook.
  2. Study the examples in the textbook.
  3. Study the examples in this lesson.
  4. Practice and apply your skills by doing odd-numbered problems from the textbook. (These will not be submitted.)
  5. One you have completed the above work for the lesson, go to the Quizzes page (main menu at left) and complete the problems from the lesson's Assessment. You will submit this assessment for grading. (It is automatically graded by Canvas.)
  6. Your handwritten problem solutions from #5 above may also be scanned and submitted for partial credit. Submit this work in the Assignment tool, as the "optional assignment" for the lesson.

Lessons 4 and 9

These lessons guide you through a review of the previous three lessons. This is your opportunity to step back and see how the individual skills you’ve been learning build on each other, working together to make you a better problem solver. In these two lessons you will again complete practice problems from the assignments at the ends of the lessons. There is also a required assignment in the Assignments page that you should download, complete and submit for a grade. These review lessons are intended to help you begin your preparation for the midterm and final exams.

Lessons 5 and 10

Lesson 5 provides you with tips and information about preparing for the midterm exam, and lesson 10 provides similar information about the final exam. Upon your request, an exam access code for these exams will be sent to a proctor who will supervise you as you take them. See the exam tips lessons in this lesson for more information about the exams.
